Gems in MY Glass . . .

Geyser Peak 1984 Reserve Alexandre, Alexander Valley, CA:    How often do we hear the comment that California wines are well made but lack long aging potential?  That comment certainly doesn’t apply to this 26- year-old impressive blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 16% Cab Franc and 3% Malbec.  From the tobacco and spice box notes that entice the nose, to the delicate, pleasing fruit and earthy, wild mushroom and licorice notes with a dash of orange rind filling the palate, this beauty is an elegant and classy aged California wine.   Polished and smooth with resolved tannins;  finishes memorably.

Chakana 2009 Maipe Torrontes, Salta, Argentina:  Incredibly lifted aromatics scream Torrontes; and the floral, perfumed notes remain persistent on the palate with bright lemon and lime peel flavors and mouthwatering acidity.  Fresh, lively, clean and well balanced.

Mercer Estates 2007 Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington:  This seductive, aromatic Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon adding complexity is lush with fresh cherries and chocolate covered blueberries at the core, accented by attractive vanilla and spice notes.  Rich with generous fruit and velvety tannins through the finish.

Alto Las Hormigas 2008 “Colonia Las Liebres” Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina:  This darkly hued Bonarda (a variety widely planted and adored by Argentineans) showcases fruity, herbal aromas leading to powerful blackberry fruit laced with balsamic notes and plenty of spicy characteristics that persist through the mid palate.  Well balanced and nicely structured, easy to quaff.

Domaine Carneros NV Brut Rose; Napa CA:   Floral aromas with a touch of yeast and vanilla tickle the nose in this blend of 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay premium California sparkling wine and move you instantly to a celebratory mood.  Juicy peach and strawberry flavors take center stage on the palate and remain focused and bright from the first to the final pleasing sip of everlasting tiny bubbles.

Dr. Loosen 2003 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett, Mosel, Germany:   Bright aromas fresh flowers, citrus and minerality lead to a rich, viscous mouthful of juicy stone fruit layered with exotic lychee fruit and splashes of lemon and lime; vibrant acidity balance the abundant fruit to perfection.
