Baileyana Winery 2005 Blanc de Blanc, 1909 Cuvee Firepeak Vineyard, Edna Valley, CA:  The French roots of Winemaker  Christian Roguenant shine beautifully with the yeasty, freshly baked bread aromas of this delectable sparkling wine that was aged on the yeast for three years and disgorged in 2009.   Creamy pear and citrus notes upon entry with a tiny stream of bubbles that enlivens the palate and gains complexity as spicy, earth tinged flavors pop gloriously throughout; bright and oh-so fresh.  (SRP:  $32)

Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards 2004 Royal Cuvee, Carneros, CA:   Aged for more than 5 years on the yeast, this deliciously dry sparkling cuvee (67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay) is invitingly aromatic with toasty yeast notes framing the juicy white peach and fresh apple flavors at the core.  Lively with a tiny bead and elegantly structured with accents of lemon zest, honeysuckle and almond brittle adding complexity on mid-palate, lingering through the satisfying finish.  (SRP:  $32)

Swedish Hill Vineyard NV Spumante Blush, Finger Lakes, NY:   If a sweeter sparkling wine is your forte, you’ll love this sassy semi-sweet sparkling wine made from a blend of grapes including Catawba.  Aromas of rose petals lead to a soft and round mouth feel with pretty fruit expression on the palate.  Delightfully balanced and clean with nice acidity offsets the sweet fruit.  (SRP:  $12.99)

Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars 2006 Blanc de Noirs, Finger Lakes, NY:  Beautiful floral aromas capture the senses with this dry sparkling wine, a blend of 96% Pinot Noir, 4% Pinot Meunier.   Strawberry, tangelo and lime entwine to create delightful mouth filling flavors.  Brilliant acidity and a creamy texture abounds and the yeasty notes speak clearly for its four years aging on the yeast before disgorgement.    (SRP:  $29.99)

Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards 2011 Gruner Veltliner, Umpqua Valley, Oregon:   Enticingly aromatic white pepper notes greet the nose and scream Gruner!  Stunning example of this variety from the new world.  The classic white pepper intertwines scrumptiously with fresh peach, green bean and lettuce leaves from the garden and a generous squeeze of lime.  Lifted on the palate with a gratifying minerally finish.  (SRP:  $24)

Goose Watch Winery 2010 Traminette, Finger Lakes, NY:  Spiced fruit on the nose promises exactly what you get when this luscious wine unfolds onto the palate with verve.  Lively and fresh with spot on acidity, nicely balancing the sun ripened peach and apricot flavors.  Finishes with pretty spice and a touch of florality.  (SRP:  $13)

Nicholson Ranch 2009 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, CA:   Enticing floral aromas set the stage for the sumptuous layers of concentrated black cherry, raspberry, wild cherry and tea box spices.   Full bodied and Impressive with its deft balance of fruit, acidity and tannins.  Skillfully crafted and should continue to blossom handsomely fully with age.   (SRP:  $42)

Miletta Vista Winery 2011 Edelweiss, Nebraska:   Pleasing ripe, sweet tree fruit aromas rise from the glass. The sweet pear and apple fruit flavors with fresh herb highlights remain focused and juicy on the palate.  The harvest date was well chosen, as the acidity nicely offsets the sweetness of the wine.  A pretty example of wine crafted from this winter hardy hybrid grape.  (SRP:  $15.25)

Davis Bynum 2010 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA: Fragrant red cherries on the nose pave the way for a delectable mouthful of juicy cherries, sun ripened red raspberries, a hint of forest floor and subtle baking spices.   Gloriously balanced on the palate with a silky smooth texture and pleasing oak nuances on the lingering finish.  (SRP:  $30)

Robert Rue Vineyards 2008 Wood Road Reserve Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, CA:    Opens with heavenly black fruit aromas and explodes with brilliance on the palate.  Blackberry, blueberry, bittersweet chocolate and freshly ground multi-colored peppercorns all meld together lusciously and coat the palate with a purity and richness that is irresistible.  (SRP:  $32)

Thouands of Zinfandel producers and fans descended upon The Concourse Exhibition Center in SF this month at the annual ZAP Festival (www.zinfandel.org), sniffing, swirling and sipping this juicy, fruit forward variety. A wine for all palates, Zinfandel is produced in styles spanning a range from soft and elegant, to spicy and richly fruited, to dense, inky black concentrated dark fruit that stains the palate, lip-smackingly good!

Here are just a few of my favorites:

Scott Harvey Wines 2008 1869 Zinfandel: Cinnamon and juicy fruit aromas set the stage for this opulent, well structured Zin from Amador County – a Zin that really expresses the sense of place. The lush and dense black fruit is bright and juicy, and simply dances on the palate with mocha, baking spices and subtle oak notes lingering deliciously through the long finish; complex with good aging potential.

Scott Harvey Wines 2008 Amador County Zinfandel, Amador: A terrific easy-to-quaff wine that vividly screams Zinfandel. From its aromas of blackberry and boysenberry preserves to the forward, mouthwatering berry packed fruitiness joining vanilla and nutmeg spice and cherry cola accents, this Zinfandel delightfully pleases the palate.

Mara 2006 Dolinsek Zinfandel, Russian RiverValley: Enticing spice and dark berry aromas lift from the glass and hold firmly through the luscious, dark berry, bing cherry, plummy mouth filling palate. Accents of freshly cracked black pepper, bittersweet chocolate and a deft touch of toasty oak add further dimensions of complexity. A sophisticated Zinfandel with impressive length, depth and structure; delicious now, and ageworthy too.

Mara 2006 Luvisi Zinfandel; Napa Valley: Inviting aromas of black cherries and a touch of creosote greet the nose and continue to broaden on the palate, intermingling attractively with flavors of wild berries, black raspberries, licorice root, nutmeg and ginger spice. Precisely balanced and nicely textured, with a finish that is lifted, bright and clean.

Mauritson Family Winery 2010 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel: Lovely purity here with lilac notes amidst nicely ripened blackberry and huckleberry aromas. On the palate, the bright berry flavors meld harmoniously with baking spices, all wrapped around pretty, well integrated oak notes. Layered and juicy with nice balance and finesse, and a persistent lingering finish.

Kenneth Volk Vineyards 2007 Zinfandel, Paso Robles: A slice of warm blackberry pie embraces the senses with this fruit dominant, succulent Zin. Rich and ripe without being over the top, and a complimentary mix of baking spices weaves attractively through the plump fruit. Generous, pleasing and easy to quaff.

Brown Estate 2010 Napa Valley Estate Zinfandel, Napa Valley: Alluring and pure from the floral and fresh blackberry and wild berry aromas through the plush and rich mouth coating blackberry and black raspberry decadence on the palate. Juicy and complex with plenty of freshly cracked multi-colored pepper spice and meshing beautifully with the sumptuous fruit.

B. R. Cohn Winery 2009 Sonoma Valley Zinfandel, Sonoma County: Black cherry aromas jump from the glass and remain juicy and consistent on the palate melding with ripe plum and blackberry flavors and a touch of pepper at the core. Round and full bodied with good acdity; there is a pretty elegance about this Zin.

Gamba Vineyards and Winery 2009 Moratto Vineyard Zinfandel, Russian River Valley: A bowlful of spice infused fresh berries awakens the senses and broadens richly on the palate with ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit taking center stage, and a swirl of caramel topping the pretty fruit. Dense, bold and full bodied with good structure; approachable now, with more promise ahead.

Hartford Family Winery 2010 Old Vine Zinfandel, Russian River Valley: Abundant spice and bright berry notes waft from the glass and the juicy huckleberry and blackberry flavors remain expressive and consistent through the generously fruity palate. This beautifully crafted Zin is well balanced and belies its 15% plus alcohol level.

Sbraggia Family Vineyards 2009 La Promessa Vineyard Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley: Evocative aromas of anise, pepper spice and deep, dark fruit wow the nose and the bountiful rich berry and black cherry fruit, savory spice, and bittersweet chocolate flavors are lively and dazzling on the palate. Balanced and fresh with a nice purity about it, finishes with pleasing touch of oak.

Bokisch Vineyards 2010 Terra Alta Vineyard, Garnacha, Lodi:  Notes of raspberry and fresh rosemary delight the nose, and lead to consistent and bright flavors on the palate.   Light on its feet with nicely defined flavors of minced herbs, raspberry, pomegranate juice and red cherry fruit, this skillfully crafted wine swirls deliciously in the mouth and remain lively and pleasing on the finish with a touch of black pepper spice.

Fields Family Wines 2009 Syrah, Lodi:  Sizzling sausage on the grill aromas pull you into the glass and meld with dark berry fruit and a dash of cocoa on the palate.  Expansive yet oh-so elegant with hints of meatiness blending provocatively with the juicy black berry and plum layers that pop brightly but are not overly ripe.   Balanced and clean with a finish that persists gratifyingly.

Duckhorn Vineyards 2002 Merlot, Napa Valley:  Every so often I must pull an older wine from the cellar and see how it has developed; and this one has blossomed handsomely.   Blueberry pie and cocoa notes on the nose broaden on the palate with roasted tomato, blueberry, wild berry and milk chocolate coating the palate scrumptiously.    Silky and elegant, well structured and stunningly balanced. 

Donati Family Vineyard 2010 Sorelle Per Sempre Chardonnay:    This vibrant unoaked Chardonnay unveils its pretty lemon blossom, apple and melon characteristics on the nose, and follows through on the palate with crisp apple, pineapple and citrus peel flavors creating a lively, appealing mouth full of goodness.   Easy to quaff and refreshing with bright acidity throughout.

Palumbo Family 2008 Tre Fratelli Meritage, Temecula Valley:   Black cherries and vanilla bean aromas abound with this expressive Meritage, a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.   Good depth and structure with layers of juicy blueberry, black cherry, cassis and plum with a nice accent of nutmeg and cinnamon spice all weaving together harmoniously from first sip to delicious, lasting finish. 

Kenefick Ranch 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Chris’s Cuvee, Napa Valley:  Made from estate fruit (83% Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of Merlot and Petit Verdot adding depth and complexity), here is full bodied, supple wine to please any Cab Sauv lover.  Fresh black cherry and plum aromas remain consistent on the palate, layered with black currant, coffee and a dusting of cocoa powder.   Gorgeous texture, lush and balanced with a finish offering a pretty touch of oak.

Rombauer 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley: Pleasingly aromatic with blackberry and black currant notes and a hint of florality leading to a mouthful of dark berry fruit, a dash of spice and tea leaf notes surround a nice backbone of supple tannins. Lush and viscous with a long lasting finish.

Rivino 2009 Viognier, Mendocino: Enticing fresh white peaches flecked with citrus greet the nose and marry with lychee and exotic spice notes coating the mouth fully. Handsomely textured, bright and fresh with lively acidity; an elegant and impressive example of new world Viognier.

Gruet 2007 Chardonnay, New Mexico: Satisfying aromas of fresh pineapple and a touch of herbs rise from the glass and broaden nicely on the palate with tropical fruit, fresh buttered toast, and beautiful minerality adding complexity. Well balanced with plenty of acidity offsetting the rich fruit.

Terra Savia 2003 Hoplander, Mendocino: This well-crafted blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot opens with enticing black cherry and tobacco aromas beckoning you into the glass. Complex and layered with generous spice and sandalwood highlighting the cassis and black cherry fruit. Boasts a plush texture with firm tannins and a finish that sings.

Bourassa Vineyards 2006 Symphony3 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley: Alluring aromas of black cassis and licorice set the stage for layers of olive, fresh mint, blackberry and cassis and a touch of cigar spice unfolding deliciously on the palate. Full bodied with firm tannins suggest its age worthiness – this is a complex, well-crafted Cab.

Pahlmeyer 2007 Chardonnay, Napa Valley: This powerfully elegant Chardonnay is intensely aromatic with tree ripened fruit and buttered toast notes seducing the senses. Tiers of sliced peaches and creamy pears sprinkled with fresh herbs, a splash of citrus, and beautifully integrated oak weave delectably across the palate. Rich, pure and elegant from first sip to memorably lingering finish.

Windy Oaks 2008 Pinot Noir, Santa Cruz Mountains: Enticing aromas of earthy, dried cherry and berry notes on the nose are followed by a delightful burst of red cherry flavors upon entry. The forest floor notes hold firm alongside cherry, wild berry and baking spices that unravel lusciously on the palate. Gutsy and full flavoured with plenty of finesse.

Clouds Rest 2009 Chardonnay, North Coast: Expressive aromas of sauteed apple slices accented with spice titillate the senses and draw you into the glass with joy. On the rich, mouth filling palate, delicious layers of citrus flecked fresh apple, juicy pear, minerality and a dash of skillfully integrated oak marry perfectly with vibrant acidity, creating an elegantly balanced, stunning Chardonnay with a lingering finish.

St. Amant 2009 Mohr Fry Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi:   Blackberry jam aromas lead to generous blackberry, raspberry and boysenberry flavors highlighted by vanilla bean and a touch of brown spice generously filling the mouth. Rich and juicy with a velvety texture, this lush Zinfandel comes from 67 year old Mohr Fry Ranch Vineyard – a simply yummy Zinfandel.

Lange Twins 2010 Musque Clone Sauvignon Blanc, Lodi: Fragrant melon and citrus notes dazzle the nose and remain bright and persistent on the palate. This all stainless steel Sauvignon Blanc captures the essence of this clone beautifully with its melon and kiwi fruit flavors. The juicy fruit is offset attractively by lively acidity; fresh and clean with an uplifting finish.

Miller Vineyards 2008 Petite Sirah, Fairplay: This tightly woven Petite Sirah is dense and powerful. Opening with fresh herb notes alongside nicely ripened (not over-ripe) fruit, it is deep and full bodied with the earthy, blackberry and blueberry flavors at the core joined by bittersweet chocolate mid palate. The tannins are firm and plentiful; a very good candidate for cellar aging, a bit restrained now but you can count on it continuing to open up beautifully over the years.

Palmina 2008 Honea Vineyard Arneis, Santa Ynez Valley:  Brimming full of floral and citrus aromas, this dry white wine (that is most known from its origins in Piedmont Italy) bursts with flavor on the palate.   Crisp pear and lime peel come to the forefront, with underlying herbs peeking through on mid palate.  A nice food pairing wine with its bright acidity and good depth.

Portola Vineyards 2008 Estate Pinot Noir, Santa Clara Valley:  Alluring scents of cherries, herbs and fresh pomegranate seeds fill the nose with this brilliantly hued Pinot Noir.  It broadens nicely on the palate with herbal, earthy notes and licorice accents playing off the bright cherry fruit taking center stage.  Smoothly textured with velvety tannins, and finishes with a pretty touch of cherry cola that tops off the impressive package.

Anthony Road 2008 Riesling, Finger Lakes:  Inviting aromas of apple and crushed river rock encourage you into the glass, and there is plenty to enjoy here.  Crisp green apple, tons of minerality and tropical melon all meld together with a nice lime zest accent.  Bracing acidity holds throughout; pure and refreshing from start to lingering finish, leaves you wanting more!

Kosta Browne 2009 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir:  Here is an intensely aromatic Pinot Noir, with red and black cherry fruit and spicy aromas wafting from the glass.  Dive in and find dense, concentrated cherry and red raspberry fruit with an overlay of provocative spices, nicely integrated oak and a dash of black tea accents offset by lively acidity.   Well defined and textured, and truly showcases the Russian River Valley terroir.

My annual trek to the Willamette Valley unveiled new gems that include not only shining Pinot Noirs, but a good representation of other red varieties (including Sangiovese, Merlot Zinfandel, Syrah and Bordeaux Blends), impressive white varieties (including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay), and a bone dry Pinot Noir Rose. Brittan Vineyards

Winemaker Robert Brittan and his wife and co-owner Ellen purchased their 128 acre hillside outside of McMinnville, Oregon in 2004. Their goal was to produce unique, top quality Pinot Noir that truly speaks to the place. This was my first exposure to Brittan Vineyards, and I must tell you from my perspective they have clearly met with tremendous success achieving their goal.

2007 Basalt Block Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: Provocative black cherry and dried herb aromas waft from the glass demanding your attention and the first sip confirms there is something very special in this glass. Layer upon layer of black cherry, licorice, red currant, anise and hints of tobacco unravel remarkably on the palate. Impeccably balanced and complex with stunning purity; irresistible.

2008 Basalt Block Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: The 2008 vintage of the Basalt Block PN showcases dense red cherry and raspberry fruit and a touch of cola, accented with earthy, mushroom notes from first whiff through the palate to the wonderful lingering finish. Supple, bright and multi-layered with lively acidity offsetting the rich fruit, and skillful use of high quality French oak barrels shines through.

2008 Gestalt Block Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: Gorgeously Burgundian in style, this polished PN opens with aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry and cranberry. The red berry and black cherry fruit flavors remain focused on the palate, melding harmoniously with exotic savory spice, licorice and an alluring thread of minerality from start to finish. Precisely structured and well balanced with beautifully integrated oak; finishes memorably.

Sineann Winery

Winemaker Peter Rosback began making wine more than 25 years ago, and maintains his passion for crafting elegant Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley as well as noteworthy wines from grapes grown in other regions around the world including Washington, California and New Zealand.

2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand: Beautiful expressive aromas of a fresh herb garden and a touch of grass which fuse delectably with the citrus and green apple notes on the palate. Bright and lively with zippy acidity and a snappy finish; a skillfully made SB.

2009 Oregon Pinot Noir: Aged in neutral French oak barrels, this is reminiscent of a graceful red burgundy with its delicate structure and elegance on the palate. Balanced and pleasing with a touch of earthiness mingling through the red cherry and spice notes from start to finish.

2008 Wyeast Pinot Noir, Columbia valley: From the Oregon side of the Hood River Gorge, this nicely crafted PN that opens with fresh cherries and forest floor notes and expands fully with cherry and wild berry, mushroom and spice accents. Round, full and gutsy with silky tannins and a finish that lingers on and on.

2010 Yates-Conwill Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton: Alluring with its fragrant spicy aromas and understated pleasing entry that bursts open on mid palate richly coating the mouth with juicy cherry, allspice and a hint of licorice holding through the lasting finish. Showing nicely in its youth, and likely to age gracefully.

2008 Champoux Merlot, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington: Inviting aromatics make way for dark wild berry and juicy blueberry flavors swirling deliciously on the palate alongside pie spices and a touch of vanilla. Balanced and elegant with nice depth and structure, and the exquisite fruitiness persists beautifully through the finish.

Natalie’s Estate Winery

Named for owners Boyd and Cassandra Teegarden’s daughter Natalie, this charming tasting room and winery located in the Chehalem Mountain AVA in the Willamette Valley region was founded in 1999. As winemaker, Boyd handcrafts small quantities of well-balanced premium wines from the Columbia, Yakima and Willamette Valley appellations.

2008 Natalie’s Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir, Chehalem Mountain: Enticing aromas of a bowlful of ripe cherries flecked with spice rise from the glass and blend handsomely with earthy, wild cherry flavors at the core. Rich, full bodied and very satisfying with firm tannins suggesting cellar worthiness.

2008 Elephant Mountain Syrah, Yakima: Minty, plummy aromas make way for layers of blackberries, plums, dark chocolate and a subtle touch of meatiness unfolding richly on the palate. Nicely structured and balanced with well integrated oak, and the purity of fruit really sings through the finish.

2008 Zinfandel, Columbia Valley: From the Oregon side of Columbia Valley, this juicy Zinfandel opens with jammy, dark berry aromas and the concentrated fruit that persists on the palate melds harmoniously with white pepper and baking pie spices. Fresh and juicy, balanced and easy to quaff.

Chehalem Winery

Chehalem‘s history dates back to 1980 with vineyard operations started by Harry Peterson-Nedry, who founded Chehalem Winery in 1990 and remains winemaker, co-owner and managing partner today. Mike Ayres shares the winemaking role with Harry, along with Asst. Winemaker Wynne Peterson-Nedry. Bill and Cathy Stoller joined Chehalem as co-owners in 1993, and they also owners of Stoller Vineyards. Chehalem’s wines include beautifully crafted red and white wine varieties showcasing quality fruit, minerality and wonderful balance.

2008 Reserve Chardonnay, Dundee Hills: You may not have tasted a great number of Chards from Oregon, but this one will convince you it belongs here! This classy Chardonnay displays fresh tree fruits and wet stone on the fragrant nose and broadens fully mid palate with layers of baked apples laced with cinnamon spice, creamy lemon curd, and minerally notes weaving throughout. The finish is heavenly with pretty spice and oak notes.

2009 Wind Ridge Block Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge: Spicy aromas full of nutmeg and cinnamon please the nose and lead to a decadent mouthful of red and black cherries, raspberry, allspice and anise unfolding brilliantly on the palate. Velvety smooth with beautifully integrated firm tannins suggesting good aging potential.

2009 Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge: Mouthwatering aromatics full of fresh cherries and florality send you dreamily into the glass where the earthy, woodsy notes are superbly interwoven with juicy cherries, wild berries, cocoa and spice. Complex and impeccably balanced with beautiful structure and nice backbone of acidity.

2010 Sekt, Semi-sparkling Riesling: Splendidly aromatic with floral, citrus and stone fruit notes and the entry simply dances on your tongue! Citrus flecked apples and white peach flavors are vibrant and clean on the palate, and the finish is uplifting and refreshing.

Carlton Cellars

Husband and wife team Dave Grooters and Robin Russell released their first wine in 2001 and soon after planted their own vineyards in the Willamette Valley. In 2007 they opened their winery and tasting room in Carlton and released their first estate wine, the exceptional Cape Lookout Pinot Noir. Today they are crafting additional varieties that captured my heart as well.

2010 Cannon Beach Pinot Gris Willamette Valley: The expressive, fruity, floral aromas of this Pinot Gris wow the senses, and it delivers on the palate too. Juicy apple, fresh pear and citrus notes and remain fresh and clean through the finish. Beautiful expression of Pinot Gris, simply delightful!

2010 Pinot Noir Rose, Willamette Valley: I love a good dry rose, and this one really hits the mark.  Enticing aromatics lead to a mouthful of delicious fresh strawberry and Rainier cherry flavors offset by bright acidity. Well-balanced and lively, and the eye pleasing, sparkling hue is a lovely bonus.

2008 Cape Lookout Estate Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton: Aromas of bright red cherries and earthy notes rise from the glass and the entry is gloriously fruity. Mushroom and fresh cherries take center stage on the palate with a dash of exotic spices adding complexity. Rich and full bodied with deep flavors, this PN is beautifully textured and showcases nicely integrated tannins.

2008 Roads End Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: Deeply fruited aromas and a touch of smokiness greet the nose, and delectable flavors of black cherry, blackberry, spice and forest floor notes broaden fully mid palate. Rich with a nice backbone of tannins, and the dense fruit and earthiness linger provocatively on the long satisfying finish.

Cana’s Feast

Cana’s Feast Tuscan inspired winery in Carlton is co-located with their charming Cucina offering brunch, lunch and supper with cuisine to match their food friendly wines. Patrick Taylor, Winemaker and Dan Duryee, Asst. Winemaker craft an exceptional new world Sangiovese, among other nice wines.

2007 Sangiovese, Columbia Valley: Inviting aromatics of dried cherry and earthy notes speak Sangiovese loud and clear, and the palate delivers equally pretty and varietally correct flavors of cherry, strawberry and herbs alongside the grape’s natural acidity. Balanced and food friendly with a gratifying finish.

2007 Syrah, Columbia Valley: This Cote Rotie style Syrah is blended with 2% Viognier, which tones down the broad tannins. Dark fruit and meaty notes please the nose and remain focused and pure on the palate with juicy layers of black cherry, berry and plum fruits and a touch of licorice adding interest. A rich, layered, stylish Syrah.

2007 Mountain Cuvee, Columbia Valley: This beautifully hued Bordeaux blend is comprised of 44% Cab Franc, 42% Merlot and 14% Cab Sauvignon. Cassis and blackberry flavors drive both the aromas and flavors with accents of roasted meats and touch of green bell pepper and spice. Full bodied with velvety tannins that top off the nice package.

Oregon wineries are really stepping up to the plate and producing outstanding wines that rival some of the top wine regions around the world. The level of quality today compared to my first visit twenty years ago is exceptional. I have added to my list a visit to the Eastern and Southern AVA’s in Oregon, too!

A return visit to the North Fork on Long Island this summer reinforces my opinion of the impressive quality of wines being produced in this growing wine region.  Well-crafted wines that truly capture the terroir of the North Fork, made by long time producers that I visited 7 years ago, and newly discovered producers.  This bucolic wine region boasts beautiful settings among rolling hills, picturesque farms, barns and quaint coastal towns, delicious cuisine and award winning wines; plenty for all to enjoy.

Jamesport Vineyards

This family owned estate winery encompasses 60 acres (with sustainable farming practices employed). Established in the 1980’s by Ron Goerler Sr., it continues to flourish with son Ron Goerler Jr. at the helm as Winemaker, and grandson Alex working in the vineyards and learning the ropes now, too. Among my favorites here are:

East End Series NV Cinq Blanc: This beautifully aromatic blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Blanc is brimming full of tree ripened peach, fresh apple and citrus notes with pretty floral and spice accents. Fresh, clean and well balanced.

2010 Sauvignon Blanc: Expressive with smoky gunflint on the nose followed by layers of juicy mango, pineapple and toasted sesame seeds filling the mouth. Racy acidity offsets the ripe fruit, and the flinty notes hold firm through the pleasing finish.

2009 Riesling: Minerality and honeysuckle blossom aromas rise enticingly from the glass and flavors of fresh apricot and juicy nectarine and honeysuckle explode with brightness on the palate. Fresh and lively, finishing long with notes of wet stone and minerality.

2005 Melange de Trois: This blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc showcases violets and cassis on the nose and expands on the palate richly with blackberry, black cherry, tobacco and earthy notes melding together seamlessly. Nicely structured with firm tannins and a lingering finish.

2007 “Jubilant” Reserve: Another winning blend from Jamesport, (68% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Syrah and 2.5% Petite Verdot) this lovely wine offers earthy, forest floor aromas. Layers of green bell pepper, blueberry, wild berries, black cherries, tobacco and allspice unfold provocatively on the palate; complex and plush through the memorable finish.

Waters Crest Winery

Waters Crest is also a family run winery in the North Fork, operated by winemaker Jim Waters and his wife Linda. They select high quality fruit from local growers and Jim creates resplendent wines that capture the North Fork terroir.

2010 Campania Bianco: This is a juicy blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Riesling and 10% Sauvignon Blanc.  Floral aromas waft from the glass and lead to ripe peach, nectarine, green apple flavors with a splash of lime swirling deliciously in the mouth.   The creamy texture is nicely offset by the vibrant acidity.

2010 Dry Riesling: Minerality and flinty slate aromas please the senses and remain focused alongside fruity flavors of crisp apples and fresh melon and a hint of florality.   Clean and bright with racy acidity, and the finish lingers on and on.

2010 Sauvignon Blanc: Grassy, herbal notes pull you into the glass and layers of white grapefruit, fresh herbs and a touch of spice awaken the palate. Beautifully balanced, vibrant and full of verve with mineral notes adding complexity.

2007 Merlot: Forest floor and earthy notes reminiscent of an old world Bordeaux fill the nose seductively.   Wild berry, blueberry and cassis flavors take center stage on the palate and intertwine pleasingly with earthy, floral accents and a touch of tobacco. Spice adds lift to the remarkable finish.

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon “Gran Vin”: Earthy aromas and a touch of white pepper join the currant, black plum and boysenberry fruit and a thread of bittersweet chocolate creating a luscious mouth feel and tremendous depth of flavors. Nicely textured and complex with smooth velvety tannins that complete the impressive package.

Macari Vineyards

This Mattituck winery is led by owners Joseph Macari Sr. and his wife, Katherine, and steering winery operations are Joseph Macari Jr. and his wife, Alexandra. The 500 acre property has been owned by the Macari family for almost 50 years now, and Macari Vineyards has been operating since 1995. It was a pleasure to see Kelli Urbanik again too, at her new post as winemaker at Macari.

2010 Rose: Irresistible with its dazzling hue and enticing strawberry and watermelon aromas, this blend of 71% Merlot, 14% Cab Franc, 9% Cab Sauvignon and 6% Malbec is attractively dry, fresh and juicy; very palate pleasing. Cranberry flavors add another dimension, and the acidity plays off the fruitiness delectably.

2010 Riesling: Inviting aromas of fresh herbs rise from the glass and meld with floral and citrus notes and crisp Asian pear at the core. Builds nicely on mid palate and sings with its racy acidity; finishes on a high note with mouthwatering lime zest.

2008 Dos Aguas: This 70% Merlot, 17% Cab Sauvingon, 8% Malbec, 4% Cab Franc and 1% Petit Verdot blend is sassy and expressive with pretty smoke notes framing cassis, plum and blackberry fruit from first intoxicating sniff through the succulent lasting finish.

2007 Bergen Road: A complex, ageworthy Meritage (42% Merlot, 30% Cab Sauvignon, 21% Cab Franc, 7% Petit Verdot) showcasing dark cassis, blackberry fruit and licorice on the nose and expanding on the palate with rich cocoa and beautifully integrated oak spices  Full bodied with lovely purity and a nice backbone of tannins.

Sparkling Pointe

If you are ready for bubbles, Sparkling Pointe is clearly one outstanding choice! In 2002 Tom and Cynthia Rosicki acquired property in the North Fork, and launched their dream to make Methode Champenoise sparkling wine, and tapped internationally known and incredibly talented Gilles Martin as their winemaker.

2007 Brut: Fresh baking dough yeastiness greets the nose with this playful and lively sparkling Brut. Flavors of tree ripened pears flecked with fresh lemon-lime notes alongside pretty acidity on mid palate shine brightly and remain sparkling through the lasting finish.

2005 Blanc de Blanc: Inviting toasty yeasty aromas pull you in and keep you oh so attentive, and at first sip the savory, yeasty, citrus infused apple flavors with toasty almond accents explode like bright fireworks across the palate; dazzling! Impeccably balanced, lively, and simply irresistible.

2001 Brut Seduction: Wow, is this ever well named – alluring aromas of fresh brioche lift from the glass and tempt you wildly. As soon as it hits your lips you’re led deeply into a rich, decadent mouthful with layers of crème brulee, wild berries, caramelized nuts, marzipan and striking acidity all dancing beautifully on the palate. Gorgeous stream of tiny bubbles through the long, flavor-packed finish.

One Woman Winery

Claudia Purita grew up on her family’s farm in Calabria Italy, and continues her father’s traditions of tending to the land and its crops reaped. She takes meticulous care in the estate vineyards on the North Fork of Long Island. We were warmly welcomed into the quaint, charming tasting room by Claudia’s spirited, knowledgeable daughter, Gabriella.

2010 Sauvignon Blanc: Lychee and citrus fruit aromas please the nose, and expand delightfully on the palate with lemon grass, grapefruit and sweet lychee fruit melding nicely and presenting a round, fleshy mouth feel offset by vibrant acidity. Nice purity too, a very refreshing quaff.

2010 Rose: From 100% Merlot estate grapes, this attractive dry Rose features a nose of flowers and fresh red cherries. Juicy and full flavored on the palate with cherries, cranberries and a touch of freshly ground peppercorns, this Rose is bright and lively with zippy acidity; great as an aperitif.

2010 Gruner Veltliner: This is a stunning example of Gruner, the most widely planted grape in Austria but not found growing nearly as often in the new world. Scents of melon and a bowl full of fresh baby lettuces leap from the glass and remain focused on the palate with a yummy white pepper accent; finishes long and clean.

2008 Estate Reserve Chardonnay: Honeysuckle blossom aromas rise from the glass and broaden on the palate with delicious layers of fresh juicy apples, crème caramel, toasty oak and creamy lemon curd. Nicely textured with a good lift of acidity and a lingering finish highlighted by flinty notes and a touch of well integrated oak and vanilla.

Hearty Beef Stew: Fully structured Petite Sirah marries beautifully with thick, aromatic beef stew, each carrying powerful flavors to the table. The richness of the stew compliments the lush fruit and nicely woven texture of Petite Sirah. Comfort food, comfort wine!

Filet Mignon topped with blue cheese: The pungent, intense flavor of the blue cheese accenting the tender beef stands up nicely to a full bodied Petite Sirah. The protein content of the beef and fat content of the cheese tones down the tannins of a muscular Petite Sirah.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with spice rub (black pepper, sea salt and sage): This is fun to match with a plumy, spicy Petite Sirah as the spice flavors of both the dish and the wine can echo one another nicely and the fruitiness stands up to the spice. The charcoal grilled meat can also bring out smoky, toasty notes in Petite Sirah.

Beef Tenderloin served atop onions reduced in Petite Sirah: Wow, this works with a big, bold Petite Sirah. The richness of the beef compliments the jammy fruit in the wine, and the concentrated wine reduction sauce brings out the sweetness of the onions. The depth of flavors in the dish can handle a dense and lush Petite Sirah.

Roasted Venison with blackberry compote: Roasted game is a pleasing match with zesty, supple Petite Sirahs that showcase savory game aromas. Using blackberries in the dish also enhances the blackberry notes in the wine, marrying the two together harmoniously.

Beef Stroganoff: The sour cream in the stroganoff sauce really highlights the creamy plush texture of a Petite Sirah, and I like how the mushrooms and spice in the dish can bring out earthy qualities in the wine.

Blackened Salmon: Fruit driven, jammy Petite Sirah can take the heat of blackened salmon. The wine’s ripe, dense fruit tones down the exotic spices in the dish. This pairing broadens the depth of delicious flavors that comingle delightfully and display an enticing kaleidoscope of flavors across your palate. A great example of successfully pairing seafood with red wine.

Eggplant Parmigiana:  I also like vegetarian fare, and I was pleased when pairing a Petite Sirah with plenty of plumy fruit and spice with this eggplant dish. In addition to it standing up to the savory spice in the sauce, the creamy mozzarella cheese also tamed the tannins.

Petite Sirah with Cheese

A cheese appetizer or cheese course after a meal also works well with Petite Sirah, which calls for full flavored cheese selections.

My favorites include:

Rosenborg Danish Blue Cheese: tangy, ripe with a touch of salt, this pairs with a wide range of Petite Sirah styles. The salty notes nicely offset a deep and fruity Petite Sirah and the wine and cheese both show peppery notes and match well in weight, too.

Swiss Gruyere: This flavorful cheese holds both sweet and salty notes. When young it is creamy and nutty, highlighting the creamy texture of a round lush Petite Sirah. With age this cheese takes on an earthy note, marrying well with an earthy, spicy Petite Sirah.

Italian Gorgonzola: Also very creamy in its youth, I like this melt in your mouth cheese with a densely fruited Petite Sirah. When aged the cheese is pungent, robust and spicy, and works terrifically with a big, bold, complex Petite Sirah.

Aged Cheddar: Rich and robust, this cheese is another one that hits the jackpot with a variety of styles of Petite Sirah.  A lush and plummy Petite Sirah was just right paired with Fiscalini’s Bandaged Wrapped Cheddar from Modesto CA; a delicious cheese boasting a classic sharp cheddar flavor without the bite.

Aged Gouda: I recently paired Frisian Farms aged Gouda from Des Moines Iowa with a dense black fruit dominant full-flavored Petite Sirah. The complex cheese brings out the depth and spice of Petite Sirah and flavors meld together deliciously.

Step outside the box; be adventurous in your food and wine pairings, after all, who’s palate is it, anyway?

Patz & Hall 2009 Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros: The captivating citrus and stone fruit nose completely draws you in, and this Chardonnay is equally compelling on the palate. Juicy white peach and crisp pear flavors with a thread of minerality and dash of spice intertwine from start to finish, showcasing quite a stunning package, and the purity of fruit and uplifted acidity simply shine.

La Follette 2008 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast: Aromas of freshly harvested cherries and spice aromas float enticingly from the glass. Elegantly structured and balanced with a silky mouth filling texture, this wine joyfully awakens the palate. Nicely integrated oak weaves through the focused red fruit and minerality at the core, and the finish is round and full, holding the pleasing flavors firmly.

Merry Edwards 2009 Cooper Smith Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley: Attractive earthy, dried cherry notes on the nose make way for concentrated cherry and wild berry fruit accented with savory spice expanding fully across the palate. Rich, dense and complex, with fruit and acid in perfect harmony. The deft handling of quality oak from the Francois Ferre barrels is evident through the lingering, memorable finish.

Sojourn Cellars 2009 Rogers Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast: Provocative mushroom and red cherry notes wow the nose and really capture the essence of this variety. Velvety smooth, deeply layered and beautifully balanced with red cherries, black raspberries, a hint of truffles and accents of anise and spice sumptuously filling the mouth. A well-crafted wine that finishes strikingly with impressive length.

Freestone Vineyards 2007 Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast: Barrel fermented in French oak; here is a plush, full bodied Chardonnay with panache. Aromas of buttered toast and citrus flecked fresh apples remain consistent with the flavors on the palate, and savory spice and minerally accents add complexity. Attractively balanced with a creamy texture offset by buoyant acidity and a lively finish.

Balletto 2009 Pinot Gris, Russian River Valley: Gorgeous aromas of fig compote and flowers jump from the glass and harmonize beautifully with the honeydew melon, citrus and apple flavors that dance on the palate. Bright, crisp and satisfying from the first sip through the last one; a wonderful example of Pinot Gris.

Siduri 2009 Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir, Green Valley: Tantalizing aromas of warm cherry cobbler and fruited tea lead to gobs of decadent red and black fruit sprinkled with a dash of spice, and smoky, earthy notes entwining attractively and gliding seamlessly across the palate. Full bodied yet displays both power and grace. Nicely integration toasty oak tops off the pretty package.

And lastly, although not from the Sonoma Coast Appellation, a lovely wine (which I tasted the same evening I enjoyed the Keefer Ranch PN) produced by a “sister” winery of Siduri. Novy Family 2010 Blanc de Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley: Here’s one to surprise your wine savvy friends with – a still white (not blush colored) Pinot Noir that opens with floral aromas and greets the lips with subtle orange and delicate cherry notes boosted by brilliant acidity. This is a fresh summer quaffer, and nice as an aperitif or paired with fresh shellfish anytime.

Sipping multiple vintages of Merry Edwards Winery’s captivating Pinot Noir surrounded by the picturesque vineyards at Meredith Estate was a brilliant example of great wine starting with quality fruit, and of terroir recognition in the New World. Merry, and husband Ken, have cultivated impressive vineyards here on rich, loamy Goldridge soil and the focus on fruit development really speaks for itself in the wines. The 2007 and 2009 vintages as well as a barrel taste of the 2010 vintage reveal definite site specificity. Each glass was brimming with concentrated raspberry and black cherry fruit layered with licorice, tea box spice, wild mushroom and forest floor notes, a touch of vanilla and nicely integrated oak. The generous fruit is lifted by bright acidity, and each vintage exemplified the gorgeous velvety mouth feel that one simply can’t resist! The lasting finish of Merry Edwards Winery’s Meredith Vineyards Pinot Noir was also consistent through the vintages, hanging long and lip-smackingly delicious.

Kanzler Vineyard 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opened with raspberry jam and appealing earthy aromas melding beautifully with ripe black cherry, fresh baked pie spice and a touch of anise on the palate. Layered and complex with nicely integrated oak; a classy, elegantly structured cool climate Pinot Noir. 

Balletto Vineyards and Winery’s 2009 Burnside Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir, also grown in rich, loamy Goldridge soil, opens with inviting red fruit, red licorice and vanilla notes joining harmoniously with juicy cherry fruit at the core. Subtle hints of earth and spicy white pepper notes add dimension to this palate pleasing, smoothly texture Pinot Noir.

Embracing the air, soil and vines of the densely spaced (4×4), meticulously tended to Sonoma Coast MK vineyard was an experience to remember. Winemaker Paul Sloan passionately articulated the focus on nature and viticultural techniques to which he and wife Kathryn are conscientiously devoted. The synergy of their organic and biodynamic practices, fine-tuned trellising and canopy management, green pruning and scrupulous attention to sun exposure and hand harvesting methods shows through impressively in the glass. Four vintages of Small Vines Wines Sonoma Coast/MK Pinot Noir - 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 all showcase purity, depth and a silky texture with a true sense of terroir. Each vintage showcases red raspberry and Bing cherry aromas and flavors blending harmoniously with woodsy, forest floor and sandalwood spice notes alongside a fine thread of minerality lingering throughout. Impeccably balanced wines that finish with elegance and persistent length; a great example of natural practices and careful vineyard management leading to a stunning treat for the senses.

Kosta Browne’s 2008 Kanzler Vineyard Pinot Noir is dazzling with its fragrant lavender and spice aromas beckoning you into the glass. Rich, complex and full bodied, this wine broadens expansively on the palate with black cherry, exotic spice, forest floor and black licorice notes intertwining deliciously through the long, decadent finish. 

At DuNah Vineyards, proprietors Diane and Rich DuNah and winemaker Greg La Follette expressed that their vineyards, planted to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, also thrive in the rich Goldridge soil. A taste of their 2007 Estate Chardonnay really pleased the nose with its buttered toast and mineral notes highlighting the crisp apple and pear aromas and flavors that expand richly on the palate. This unfined, unfiltered Chardonnay truly captures the essence of this variety. Nicely balanced and complex, finishing brightly with a kick of spice. Two vintages of DuNah’s Pinot Noir (2006/2007) open with fresh herb and pretty violet aromas that lead to inviting layers of juicy cherry, bay leaf and woodsy forest floor notes. Greg shared that the angle incidence of the sun is very important up here. Clearly attention to detail in the vineyards shows through with their rich yet lively wines that are well balanced and nicely structured with good acidity holding up the generous fruit. 

A soul pleasing, envigorating stroll through the Freestone Vineyards property perched at an elevations from 200 to 500 feet and seven miles from the ocean enlivens the senses. The sandy, loamy Goldridge soil and the influence of the morning coastal fog lifting to warm sunny days are ideally suited to these 60 planted acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Employing biodynamic practices, Freestone’s Pinot Noirs showcase purity, balance and scrupulous attention to detail in the vineyards. The 2009 Pastorale Vineyard Pinot Noir boasts satisfying aromas of a fresh bowlful of raspberries and cherries and the flavors remain consistent with spices and herbs, a touch of earth and a splash of cherry cola unraveling delicately across the palate. A very refined, well balanced, elegant Pinot Noir. The equally delightful 2009 Quarter Moon Pinot Noir is brawnier with juicy wild cherry, black cherry raspberry and herbal scents and flavors melding richly with black licorice and earthy, forest floor notes. Chewy, dense and full bodied with firm tannins that suggest cellar worthiness. 

Any one of these impressive wines will convince you to seek out Sonoma Coast appellation wines; and stay tuned for more shining examples in months to come!
